About

A walking tour led by Brian Samuels exploring the rich and varied (but perhaps less obvious) history of the area settled in the 1840s/1850s. Gather on the western footpath between St Paul’s Church and its hall (away from the traffic noise) for a 6.30pm sharp departure and a 90 minute (Approx). Our usual end of meeting refreshments will be at the Cottage Kitchen, 160 St Vincent St. Port Adelaide

Park in the shopping centre car park behind the supper venue. The walk will complete a loop from St Paul’s down Nelson St to the Birkenhead Bridge, along the waterfront to the playground and Jervois Bridge, and down St Vincent St to the Cottage Kitchen.

Among many topics covered will be the original St Paul’s (1841), the Birkenhead Bridge, the slipways and shipyards of Birkenhead, Hart’s Mill (1855: the Port’s oldest industrial building) and its successors, the Sugar Refinery fire of 1926, the E & A Copper Company smelters that smelted Burra and Moonta ore, the Port (1859), Jervois (1878) and New Jervois (1969) Bridges, Knapman’s Cannon Brewery, and the well-disguised remnants of the Star Picture Theatre.
